Counseling

What is school counseling?

School counseling promotes learning through three areas of student development:

  • Academic Development
  • Personal/Social Development
  • Career Development
Pearl Ridge Elementary School Counselors play a key role in helping your child successfully achieve the above areas of development by actively involving staff, parents/guardians, community agencies, and establishing an effective partnership between all parties. Counselors also assist students in developing positive attitudes towards school, respecting self and others, improving peer inter-relationship skills, developing effective academic skills, and coping with personal and family problems.

Individual and Group Counseling

Counselors meet weekly with students in group and individual sessions to provide students with guidance on issues impeding learning or emotional/social development, such as:

  • Anger Management
  • Bereavement Divorce
  • Peer Relationships
  • Social Skills
  • Study Skills
  • Consultation and Coordination
Counselors consult with parents/guardians, staff, and agencies regarding student progress, classroom interventions, and issues impacting a student's learning, such as school phobia, academic difficulties, divorce, abuse, homework, classroom behavior, etc. Counselors can also link parents/guardians with community resources that provide families with assistance in parenting, tutoring and extra-curricular activities.

Student Mediation Program

Volunteer students are trained in a 4-step mediation process that enable them to help others find positive ways to solve disagreements during recess. Through this program, students find ways they can solve their own problems before they escalate into more serious difficulties.

Classroom Guidance

Counselors implement classroom guidance lessons, as requested by teachers, concerning a variety of topics. Problem-solving, stress management, peer relationships, anti-bullying, conflict-resolution skills, and transitioning to intermediate school are examples of guidance lessons taught.

If you have any questions regarding School Counseling Services, or would like to consult with us, please don't hesitate to call. We look forward in assisting you and your child at Pearl Ridge Elementary.
